Linfield College Adult Degree Program

The Online Learning Environment

What is it like to be an online student? How will I interact with my classmates and professors? How difficult and time consuming is the process? These are all questions that applicants, who are new to online learning, ask us. And rightly so. All of our professors and advisors are experienced in the online environment and will step you through the process. Your fellow students will also be invaluable resources as well as the almost limitless resources you will find on the web. We recently sat down with three of our best online learners to discuss how they approached their coursework and what a Linfield degree means to them.

Why did you decide to finish your degree?

Jennifer

I'm Jennifer Rhafir, I'm a third-year marketing major at Linfield's Adult Degree Program. I decided to come back and finish my degree because a year ago I had my daughter Sonya, and it absolutely changed my life forever. And I knew that by obtaining my degree that I would open up opportunities career wise. By having that degree, I could better the life of my family.

Kathy

My name is Kathy Attaway and I’m a senior in the RN to BSN program at Linfield College. The initial reason that I decided to get my bachelor’s degree is that it’s the trend in nursing now to make the bachelor’s the minimum requirement for professional nursing.

Fred

I'm Fred Van Drimmelen. I have a Bachelor of Science in Management from Linfield and I'm currently working for Cisco Systems. What attracted me to Linfield as a program was the small liberal arts education and the focus of the professors within their fields of study.

Application & Enrollment It's easier than you think

Jennifer

The process of me transferring to Linfield from my previous college was absolutely easier than I ever could have imagined.

Kathy

Having all of my past experience and education count was so much easier than I expected. Really, it was all done for me. I was contacted immediately and given plenty of information and just walked through the whole process. I had my whole plan laid out from the beginning.

Fred

Compared to my expectations of registration and enrollment, it was much simpler than I would have expected to start with. It was facilitated by my advisor and the staff at Linfield quite effectively.

Learning to Learn Online

Jennifer

I had never been in an online class format and it was absolutely overwhelming. So although there were challenging times when I first began to pursue my degree online, I learned how to reach out to my professors to find out exactly what was expected of me for each class. I also learned how important it was to reach out to my fellow classmates and use the discussion element of the online courses to further my ability to learn within the class framework.

Kathy

I think the most useful part of online learning as opposed a classroom is that you get a chance to interact with everyone. I really believed online learning would be getting an assignment, completing it on my own and then uploading it to some site. I had no idea that there would be so much interaction, not only with the professors, but with my fellow students.

Fred

The phrase that you get out of the process, what you put into the process, is very true in the online learning environment. If you go into it wanting to absorb and learn it is a very effective toolset.

Jennifer

Sometimes I have to take it upon myself to research exactly what I'm looking for and it's made me a stronger learner. I've become a stronger researcher, and I know that if I'm not comprehending something that I have the tools to go out and find exactly what I'm looking for.

Work At Your Own Pace The Linfield Program is Flexible

Fred

The satisfaction of being able to do an online course, whether I'm in Oregon, whether I'm in Ireland, whether I'm in Israel, whether I'm in Arizona, it's very helpful to the learning process to accommodate my schedule.

Jennifer

The online learning environment is amazing. You can fit it in whenever you possibly can. I can be a stay at home mother as well as a student. I need something flexible enough that when my baby is taking a nap, I can squeeze in some calculus homework. It fits the needs of your life.

Online Students Are Part of the Linfield Community

Kathy

My experience in the Linfield program gets a 4.0. It has been not only a wonderful learning environment, but also a wonderful networking opportunity.

Jennifer

I absolutely felt like part of the Linfield community.
